Personal branding goes far beyond wearing Converse or dying your hair purple, tho that’s a good start ;). Whether you are looking for your next challenge, you are a student, or an employed professional, L’Oréal recruiters Mathis, Paola and Kristina say that it is good to think and act like a leader. Here are three tips to get you started.
1. Identify your strengths
What can you do great that other’s cannot? What’s your superpower?
Mathis suggests that you start with thinking about the characteristics and strengths you’ve built in your career.
“If you are stuck, think about that “one thing” that everyone says you rock at. If you’re still stuck, ask people around what they appreciate most about you. There is always that one thing that you do or what other people want you to do for them.” — Mathis
Paola emphasizes that thinking about your strengths is very much linked to your personal features: “It starts with your personal appeal — being as easy as saying you have a crazy sense of humour.”
2. Build a platform
Having a platform to express yourself and share your voice can definitely help to score some points.
“Whether it is your website or social media accounts that represent you, make sure to keep them consistent. The fewer variations you have, the easier it is to be memorable. You might like to rename your email address for the sake of consistency, too. For instance, firstname.lastname@example.org might not be a good one.”— Paola
That being said, it is a good idea to integrate your personal brand into everything you do — starting from the tone and style. For example, whether it is photos, memes, cool diagrams or even your CV. Simply blogging or showing up on social media doesn’t cut it.
3. Own your space
Once you’ve identified your uniqueness and strengths, perfect them.
Learn all that you can and become the expert in that area.
L’Oréal recruiters suggest thinking about what you offer your audience; make them feel that investing their time in your content pays off. Do you share lessons learned from your own personal or professional experience? Do you offer leadership insights? Or maybe tips on how to master certain skills. These are just a couple of examples that might be helpful.
“Prepare stories that illustrate times when you have successfully solved problems or performed memorably. It’s important to keep in mind that there are no right or wrong answers.“— Kristina
At the end of the day having a clear picture of your personal and professional goals will ensure you stay on track both in action and your decision-making.
